2011 America On Wheels Museum Holliday Train Display

Post  Cale on Sun Oct 23, 2011 8:47 pm

Hello All

We will again this year be setting up a LEGO train display at the America On Wheels auto museum in Allentown PA. Last year we had a pretty small display for the museum and took most of our train layout to Hartford. For this year we have a much bigger area at the museum to fill and I would really like to see us put most of our energy into that. The museum is a local show (always a good thing to display in your own community), and a they have been very generous with us in giving us display space meeting space for our October meet, among other things. So in appreciation I would really like us to give them a stellar display this year.

I need to know who is going to be participating and what they want to display. Jim C. has set up a Google Calendar that should be helpful to keep track of who can help man the display and what times.

Thank You

I would like to help with this if I can (work / personal schedule permitting...)

Cale - as I am assuming you are planning a layout, if you want to use any of my MOC's just let me know. I think that you know what I have.

Excelent! Yes I know what you have. I don't have a plan yet but I have some ideas.

By the way does any one know what the max dimensions were that we came up with at the October meet? I forgot to write them down but I think they were 12ft by 20ft actual layout with additional room for stanchions.

You can use what I've got (or what you've got of mine). So there will be a big setup day on the 19th? I'll mark it down.

I don't know what buildings we'll be using yet for the down town. Who wants to contribute?

Just wanted to let you know that I'd like to work my cars in there, including the Tucker Torpedo. I feel that since it's an antique car museum, it's pretty important to have some iconic vehicles on display...Delorean and Ghostbusters Ecto 1, too, if it's at all possible.

And, like I said at the meeting, I can populate the downtown. For the winter village, I can contribute my Santa's sleigh, some elves, and a swanky Santa. Actually, I was thinking that the Ford Model A pickup truck might be good a good choice for his ride, too...It's green with red wheels, and the gifts could be stashed in the back.

As far as decorating is concerned, I don't have any Christmas stuff I can contribute. What I do have, however are ten Lego posters that I've gotten from the Lego magazine over the years, with the oldest going back to 1995. If you want to use them, they're available.

Cale,

Do we have the table to make up the 2 x 6 section of tables on the left side or will we have to use (2) 2 x 4 tables perpendicular to each other? Just a thought, it could make the corner of the rail yard larger or the corner of the winter village larger?

We either ned to make a table for that section or use a 2x4 as you're thinking though that would cut into interior space a little more.

Just a reminder. Set up is scheduled to start this Saturday the 20th at 10 am. We can get to set up set on Sunday if needed. The Holliday train display officially starts Friday the 25th and runs through the month of December. Any one can help with set up this weekend or come out for a day while the show is running to help run the display should post here so we can keep track for scheduling. We can then add this info to the Google Calendar.

I will bring the Snail Emporium on Sunday, and help with the final touches then. Please leave a 32x32 space for it, preferably with the right side open for the snail window on the side. Also, anything that you see we need after you are done on Saturday, please email me, and I will see if I can rustle it up for Sunday. I will also bring the PennLUG cargo container.

I'll be there on Saturday. Hoping to be there between 10-11am and I can stay until 3-4pm or so.

Also planning to staff on Saturday, Dec 3rd. I may be able to carve out some other weekend dates but can't commit at this point. And can be there on December 30 for the take down.

Thank you to every one who has participated with this display so far. Weather you have MOCs in the layout, helped set up or have come out to help man the display your help is greatly appreciated. I have not been out to see the finished display yet since set up but I've been hearing great things about it and people really enjoy seeing it.

Lets not forget though that we still need people to volunteer and help look after the display while it's up for the month of December. If you have some free time and want to help please contact Joel to find out about volunteering.

Also has any one taken any photos of the layout yet?

Thank You

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Did you end up going Saturday? I was planning on being there but things didn't work out as planned. I know Josh was there later that evening. Anyways for anyone else going in the future. Even if you don't know how to run the trains, just plug in the green extension cord and the trains will run with the big red button. Plug in the orange extension cord and the ecto-1 will light up.

No worries! I spent a few hours there while my sister & nephews enjoyed the museum. I had visitors push the red button to make the Sante Fe train go around. It does seem to overheat or run slower when there's several pushes in a row. Letting it sit for a few minutes in between helps.

Cale, I will pick you up at 8am Friday (with the trailer).

KC, can you bring the metal frames for the plexi-glass display cases with you to Allentown, I will take them and figure out how they are assembled. As well as storing them until anyone needs for an event.

Thanks
