Off-Topic - Fluorescent Lights

Post  Uniblab on Mon Mar 08, 2010 2:05 pm

I realize this is mostly off topic but it could be useful to some people who need good lighting for their layout (or anything else).

While in the Sanders’ basement I noticed they have a few of the 2-tube fluorescent light fixtures. This reminded me there are some used fixtures for sale where I work for 4$ (four dollars) each.

Note: NO BULBS/TUBES INCLUDED.

These are good industrial grade fixtures designed for use in dropped ceiling applications. However, they can be installed anywhere in a permanent installation (permanently wired – not using a standard removable plug).

Each fixture is 2 feet by 4 feet with a diamond pattern diffuser panel which opens like a door panel to change the tubes.

They are for direct wiring which means there is no plug but only 2 wires coming out of the top opening. A ground wire (not supplied) will need to be connected directly to the frame to provide proper and safe electrical connection wherever installed. (I don’t mean to make it sound overly complicated. It isn’t. Just like any device with a 3-prong connector, it has a ground (the 3rd prong). When connecting these lights just make sure you use a screw or bolt to make a solid connection to the bare (ground) wire upon the metal of the fixture in addition to the 2 other insulated wires.

If you want to get any of these fixtures but are hesitant because of the above paragraph, I’m sure there are several people in the club who are willing and quite capable of installing them safely for you. Perhaps for a nominal fee. (Dinner, such as something home cooked or pizza, works for me…)

These fixtures are ideal for basements, garages or any other permanent type installation.

I asked around among the people near me at the meeting when I brought up that I could get them. I picked up 3 for Tony but I don’t know if anyone else is interested. Therefore I am putting it out to the whole club.

There are about 10 or 12 left. A couple may have cracked or broken diffusers but I will pick out the best ones I can. No guarantees on how long they will be around. It is strictly first come- first served basis.

If anyone wants any please let me know right away and I will buy them now. I can bring them to the next meeting and get reimbursed then.

Joel,

I got your 6 yesterday. There were about 8 left.

When I walked through there today I didn't see any more unless they moved them. If anyone wants any they better let me know ASAP.

Tony and Joel,

I forget whether either of you are coming to the meeting Saturday in Scranton. If you'll be there I'll bring your lights.

If you'll both be there I need to try to get all 9 in my car...

If anyone else wants 1 or 2 of these lights there may still be a couple left.

Tony,

Thanks for letting me know. I don't mind holding them at all. I'm glad to be able to share the opportunity to get the lights with the club.

My biggest concern at this time is transporting them. They are a bit bulky and trying to fit all 9 securely in my car would be a bit of a challenge.

Joel, Are you going to be there Saturday?
