Advise needed on STAR WARS sets

Post  Sacha on Sun Sep 21, 2014 11:11 am

Hi, all!  Longtime no chat.

It's been a busy Summer paying the bills.  I recently sold a Star Wars collectible and part of what I received in trade was 25+ partially assembled LEGO STAR WARS sets (without Boxes, Instructions or Mini Figures).  There is still an inch or two of loose bricks at the bottom of the tub that I'm not sure to which set they go.  (If you have already built most of these sets and think you could help to determine to which sets the loose bricks belong, that would be a huge help!)   Smile

When it came to STAR WARS ships, I have always preferred to buy Hasbro toys over LEGO sets.  That being said, I have a dilemma.
Should I:
1. Confirm whether or not the sets are complete (not including Mini Figures and/or Accessories) and then sell them. (time consuming)
2. Assemble the complete sets and then sell them.
3. Sell the sets As-Is. (potentially get less money)
4. Disassemble the sets and incorporate the pieces into our family collection.
5. A combination of the above.

I don't know if any of the sets themselves or the pieces therein are rare or expensive.

I used this website to identify the sets: http://brickset.com/sets/theme-Star-Wars

This is what I found:
B-Wing Starfighter; 10227; 2012
Sandcrawler; 10144; 2005
Rebel Snowspeeder; 10129; 2003
Y-wing Attack Starfighter; 10134; 2004
Millennium Falcon; 4504; 2004
AT-AT; 4483; 2003
Cloud City; 10123; 2003
Imperial Star Destroyer; 6211; 2006
Trade Federation MTT; 7662; 2007
Clone Turbo Tank; 7261; 2005
Imperial AS-ST; 10174; 2006
Jabba's Sail Barge; 6210; 2006
AT-TE (with Clone Speeder Bike); 4482; 2003
TIE Fighter Collection; 10131; 2004
Wookiee Catamaran; 7260; 2005
Slave I; 6209; 2006
X-wing Fighter; 6212; 2006
Jedi Starfighter with Hyperdrive; 7661; 2007
ARC-170 Fighter; 7259; 2005
Anakin's Jedi Interceptor; 9494; 2012
B-wing Fighter; 6208; 2006
Republic Swamp Speeder; 8091; 2010
General Grievous Chase; 7255; 2005
Jedi Starfighter and Vulture Droid; 7256; 2005
A-wing Fighter; 6207; 2006
Clone Speeder Bike (white; similar to what comes with the AT-TE 4482)

Thanks for reading!

Hope to see you soon!

Hello Sacha,

If the goal is to sell them one by one, it is probably a better idea to determine what you have first. I don't really sell Lego sets online, but my guess is that the missing minifigs and, to a lesser extent, boxes will make a big difference in price.

If you would like to see what similar sets have sold for in the past, eBay has a nice feature that allows you to limit your search to completed listings that have ended within the past 90 days. Search by set # and/or name and then, under the "show only" sidebar, limit your search by completed listings (shows all completed listings) or sold (only shows listings that sold) and you should get a pretty good idea of what you might expect on there.

You can see what people are selling stuff for on Bricklink. When you look up a set, the set's webpage should have an option called "view price guide." Using that tool, you can see what the set has sold for on average within the last 6 months. You might also want to view current lots for sale to see how much other people are asking for sets in similar condition.

If it were me, I would probably auction everything on eBay in lots by year and see what happens.

Some of those sets are quite valuable. I'd start by deciding which sets you'd like to keep and which you might like to sell. Then, see if the minifigs from the "to sell" sets are present (if applicable). Then, assemble the rest of those sets and see how complete they are. If you can buy a couple parts off Bricklink to fill in gaps, then resell them, you can make some good money. If the sets are far from complete, then just dump 'em in with the rest of your stuff. It can be time consuming, but it can also be lucrative.

You could use brickset.com to help organize those sets. They should have a parts lists for most of the sets you have listed. Try there.

Unless the inventory is complete and accurate, I don't think Bricklink is the place to sell them. You can easily sell "as is" lots on ebay, but they snag a higher fee from you than BL does.
