GameX Games & Media Expo (Oct 22-24, 2010)

Post  P_Thorne on Sun Jan 24, 2010 2:03 pm

What: GameX Games & Media Expo
When: October 22-24, 2010
Where: Greater Philadelphia Expo Center (Oaks, off Rte. 422, north of KoP)
Topics: Video games, steampunk, anime
Attendance: Unknown
Volume: Loud

The 2009 "GameX Games & Media Expo" (sponsored by NBC-10) was held October 23-25, 2009, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. It will be held again next year: October 22-24, probably in the same place. It appears to be a reincarnation of NBC's "Tech & Lifestyles Expo" (at which DelVaLUG exhibited) held from 2004-2005 in the defunct Fort Washington Expo Center.

Exhibitors in 2009 included video game makers, video game college programs, four student robotics teams, steampunk groups and artists, amateur artist- and webcomic-venders (some of whom also appear at Zenkaikon), U.S. Army recruiters, Ford and their "Sync" technology, seven different bands, three Star Wars groups (Garrison Carida®️, PA Jedi, NY Jedi), and others. There were panels, video programming, game tourneys, QVC, and some minimal promotion by Syfy.

There appeared to be "freebie" tables in the ticket lobby, so flyers from non-exhibitors may be welcome.

The expo does charge a fee to attendees (adult/youth/family, one/three days). Pre-reg is nominally cheaper than at-the-door, but not really, because of convenience fees. KC and Trev attended and verified that exhibitors are also charged fees; PennLUG would want to try to negotiate a complimentary pass, promoting ourselves as a draw. Unless we want to sell stuff, then an exhibitor fee might be a justifiable business cost.

I visited on Friday afternoon, which had low attendance (as you might expect), so the expo space seemed very empty. The extra-wide pathways between exhibitors would probably be welcome when crowded. There was plenty of room for additional exhibitors; the expo may have been under-subscribed due to its newness and the state of the economy.
